modern Republicans only see the world as black or white. They also have a fundamental ignorance on what “appeasement” is and means. This essentially precludes them from any sort of progress because they see ANY form of bargaining as giving away safety, security, prosperity, whatever. And they are always wrong. If it weren’t for those pesky things like rules, laws, and morals, they would just exterminate anyone they disagree with. Dubious tactic, yes, but don’t think that isn’t what they want.
